Due to the strong current in the Ganga river in Haridwar, 7 kanwariyas were washed away, who were rescued by the water police and SPO. The water police and SPOs posted at the Ganga Ghats in Haridwar are keeping a close watch on the Kanwariyas and are being given life by working diligently in case of any untoward incident.

Let us tell you, in the Kanwar season, from Harki Paidi Brahmakund to Haridwar, there is a train of Kanwariyas on all the ghats of the Ganges. In such a situation, many times the kanwariyas get washed away in the fast current of the Ganges due to their carelessness, who are being saved by the water police and SPOs posted on the spot.

In the last years, this time the police have deployed water police extensively on the Ganga Ghats to check the death of Kanwariyas who drowned while bathing in the Ganges during Kanwar. More than 100 government and private divers have been engaged to rescue the drowning Kanwariyas.

There is no dearth of such youth on the Ganga Ghats, who run their livelihood from the Ganges. These young men are skilled in swimming and on normal days they make their living by finding money etc. in the Ganges. This time, the police have made SPOs (Special Police Officers) and posted them on the same Ganga Ghats, which these youths have full experience with.

The presence of police on the road during Kanwar is very important. Even more important than that, now there seems to be a presence of water police in the middle of the water because the chances of accidents on the road are much less than water. To rescue people drowning in water, 22 teams of water police have been deployed at different ghats of Haridwar. A team consists of 5 to 7 members.
