Nainital: Due to good rain spells in February and March, the water level in the Naini Lake has touched a ten-year-high at 14 feet.
Experts have welcomed this rise in the level of water in the lake, which is the main source of water for Nainital.
“The rise in water level of Naini Lake is always good news. As the use of water increases during summers, the administration will not have to worry about supplies,” Ajay Singh Rawat, a Nainital-based environmentalist said.
The present water level in the lake is six-feet higher than the usual. Prior to this, the water level in the lake had touched the 14-feet mark in 2010.
The rise in the water level is significant as eight lakh litres of water (on an average) from the lake is used daily through 11 tube wells. Besides, the lake is a major tourist attraction and gives a picturesque view to the town.
Meanwhile, officials say that they are looking at ways to conserve the water in the lake. “The demand for water peaks during dry months like May and June. Thus, it is necessary that the excess water in the lake is preserved.”
