Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday paid tribute to Amar Shaheed Sridev Suman, the hero of Tehri Jan Kranti, on his death anniversary by offering flowers to his picture.

The Chief Minister said that Sridev Suman fought for democracy in the difficult circumstances of his time and sacrificed his life. He said that the life story of Sridev Suman, full of dedication and struggle, will always inspire us to serve the motherland.

“Tribute was paid to freedom fighter and symbol of struggle and sacrifice Sridev Suman ji on his death anniversary at the camp office. Despite suffering many tortures, he never deviated from the path of justice. His life is a source of inspiration for all of us,” Pushkar Dhami said in his post on X.

On this day, seventy years ago, Uttrakhand’s Sridev Suman gave up his life while fighting for civil rights in the princely Tehri state. He died on July 25, after he had undertaken a fast unto death against the awful conditions in the Tehri jail where he was an inmate.

In 1942, at the height of tax protests, Suman and many other activists were jailed. Late in 1943, he was tried for treason and jailed again. The terrible conditions of Tehri’s prisons made him lead a fast to death in protest. After 84 days, he died a martyr’s death, inspiring a generation of activists to take up the banner of liberation that eventually toppled the princely state.

Earlier on Tuesday, July 23, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the union budget, terming it historic, farsighted, and inclusive. He said, “This budget will help to achieve the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’. It brings relief to every section of society. It resolves the problems of women, farmers, youth, and the poor.”

The Union budget was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the LokSabha on Tuesday, 23 July. (ANI)
