Doctors Day is celebrated as the birthday of the great doctor of the country, Bidhan Chandra Roy.

The Central Government started celebrating National Doctors Day in the year 1991. Doctors’ Day is celebrated on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great doctor of the country, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He contributed his life for the people, treated many people and inspired millions.

Apart from this, he was also the personal physician of Mahatma Gandhi. Born on July 1, 1882 in Bankipur, Patna, Dr. Roy studied in England. After returning to India in 1911, new hospitals were started in Kolkata.

He was the Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 consecutive years from 1948 to 1962. In 1961, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India. Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy died of a heart attack on his birthday in 1962. In the year 1976, the BC Roy National Award was instituted in his memory to recognize an eminent person working in the fields of medicine, science, public affairs, philosophy, art and literature.
