At least 12 persons were injured when a local train rammed into a stationery express train and got derailed near Kacheguda railway station in Hyderabad on Monday, railway officials said.

The local train, a Multi-Modal Transport Service (MMTS), proceeding from Falaknuma to Secunderabad collided with an Intercity Express train on the same track. Wrong signalling said to be the reason for the accident.

“It was given a green signal to arrive on platform No 2 in the Kacheguda railway station, but there was already anther train standing. The MMTS train, which was slowing down as it was approaching the railway station, rammed into the Inter-City Express, just a few metres away from the platform,” a South Central railway official, who preferred anonymity, said.

The MMTS train engine got mangled in the accident, while three coaches got derailed and tilted towards left side. MMTS train driver, identified as Sekhar, is said to have suffered serious injuries and was stuck in the engine. His condition is said to be critical and the officials are said be struggling to take him out.

“At least a dozen passengers in the coaches behind the engine suffered injuries due to the impact. It would have been a serious accident had the MMTS was not running slow,” he said.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several local trains via Kacheguda were cancelled. Important express services were running on the other tracks.

South Central Railway (SCR) confirmed the accident and announced setting up enquiry into the accident. Officials said the MMTS was to get signal for platform No 4 but, got clearance for platform No 2. The goof up is being probed into.
