The Animal Husbandry Department has issued an alert after the confirmation of the dreaded infectious disease African Swine Fever (ASF) in pet pigs in Uttarakhand. Animal Husbandry Director Dr. Prem Kumar has instructed the veterinary officers to be vigilant. Also said that pigs affected by fever should not come in contact with any other animal.

The Director of Animal Husbandry said that after the death of 35 pigs in Pauri and 80 in Dehradun, samples were sent to Indian Veterinary Research Institute Bareilly for examination. In the investigation, the cause of death of pigs has been found to be African Swine Fever.

Dr. Prem said, only pigs are affected by swine fever disease. It is not harmful to humans. There is no need to be worried about this. Yes, it is necessary that a certain distance should be kept from the pig affected by the disease.

African swine fever is a highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild animals. It is caused by a large DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family. In this disease not only the productivity of the animals is affected, but it also leads to their death.
