According to the latest updates coming from political circles, it is being reported that the central government is planning to include the Bhagavad Gita in NCERT textbooks. The central government is planning to include references to the Bhagavad Gita in classes 6 and 7 and shlokas in Sanskrit books of classes 11 and 12.

According to a Hindi newspaper report, the BJP explained the move by stating that the government wanted students to learn about Indian culture. However, the Congress and other opposition parties criticized the decision and said that the BJP was trying to saffronise the education system. Congress leaders also said that if the BJP wanted to include the Bhagavad Gita in the syllabus, it should consider other religious books as well.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi said, “Para 4.27 of National Education Policy (NEP) 2022 refers to the traditional knowledge of India which strives for the welfare of all. “To become a knowledge power in this century, we must understand our heritage and teach the world the ‘Indian way of doing things’,” he said.
