YouTube removes five Myanmar TV channels from platform

Alphabet Inc’s YouTube has removed five channels of Myanmar’s military-run television networks hosted on its platform in the wake of the coup in the South-east Asian country. “We have terminated a number of channels and removed several videos from YouTube in accordance with our community guidelines and applicable laws,” a YouTube spokeswoman said in a statement in response to a Reuters question. The channels taken down include the state network, MRTV, (Myanma Radio and Television) as well as the military-owned Myawaddy Media, MWD Variety and MWD Myanmar, YouTube said. Their removal comes during the bloodiest week so far of anti-coup protests, with 38 people killed on Wednesday, according to the United Nations, as security forces tried to crush rallies and used live rounds in some ar...

YouTube on iOS is finally receiving an update

American multinational technology company Google has finally released a YouTube update for iOS. This is the first time since December that the application has received an upgrade. According to Mashable, the update was released earlier this week. Though it is not clear as to why it took so long for Google to roll out an update for YouTube on iOS, it's good that it is finally here. Google has mentioned that the company would be adding labels to apps that need updates. Users will be able to see updates to the app page listings which will now also include new app privacy details. According to a report on the company's blog, the labels will represent the maximum categories of data that could be collected. This essentially means that users will be able to use all the features and servi...

According to The Verge, YouTube will no longer be accessibly available to stream on the third-generation Apple TV, first launched in 2012. However, the fourth-gen Apple TV HD and fifth-gen Apple TV 4K that Apple currently sells will remain unaffected. The full message being shown to users via 9to5Mac is given below: "Starting early March, the YouTube app will no longer be available on Apple TV (3rd generation). YouTube is testing new ‘Clipping Tool’ feature

American online video-sharing platform YouTube is rolling out a new experimental feature to a small set of creators that allows users to capture and share moments from videos and live streams. According to Mashable, an experimental clipping tool will be visible on channels where the test is live. Users can then click on that tool and choose a five-second to sixty-second segment from their videos and streams. They can even adjust the length of the clip within the set limits by dragging the slider. After creating a clip, a title can be added and shared across various platforms via a new URL, embed code, text, or email. The resulting clip doesn't lead to a new video, but can only be played on the original video in a repeating loop. This means that the clip will be deleted when the original ...

YouTube Shorts eyes TikTok competition with 3.5 billion daily views in India

YouTube Shorts ― the video-sharing website's quick clips meant to compete with TikTok ― are racking up 3.5 billion views a day during beta testing in India, the platform's head said yesterday. Susan Wojcikci explained the feature in a note laying out her 2021 priorities. “So far, videos in our new Shorts player ― which helps people around the world watch short videos on YouTube ― are receiving an impressive 3.5 billion daily views!” she said. “We’re looking forward to expanding Shorts to more markets this year.” YouTube, a subsidiary of Google, unveiled Shorts in mid-September, describing the videos as “a new way to express yourself in 15 seconds or less.” The feature, directly integrated into the existing YouTube interface, is currently only available in India as part of de...

Soon you may be able to do your shopping on YouTube

What if you could pick up that trendy coat or those fun sunglasses you saw in a YouTube video right then and there while you’re watching? A good way for brands and influencers, as well as YouTube, to capitalise on online product placements. Will YouTube become an e-commerce site? The online video platform seems to be experimenting with new features to facilitate online shopping. According to an update on their features, YouTube has announced that it will offer some YouTubers the possibility to list certain products or items mentioned in their video thanks to a new icon that takes the form of a shopping cart. YouTube suspends Trump’s channel after violating policy on inciting violence

Alphabet Inc’s YouTube said today it has suspended Donald Trump’s channel as it violated policies for inciting violence after last week’s assault on the US Capitol by the president’s supporters. Online platforms and social media companies are distancing themselves from, and taking action against, those that encouraged or engaged in the violence in Washington, DC. Trump’s channel is now prevented from uploading new videos or livestreams for a minimum of seven days, which may be extended, Youtube said in a statement. Supporters of Trump stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday, trying to halt the certification by Congress of President-elect Joe Biden’s election win. Trump, who has challenged the validity of Biden’s victory without producing evidence, initially praised his supporters b...

YouTube Slammed by Grammy Winner for Not Protecting Copyrights

An Grammy-award winning composer sued YouTube for failing to protect her and other “ordinary creators” from unauthorized copying and use of their work on the giant video-sharing platform. Maria Schneider, who has won five Grammy Awards, most recently in 2015 in the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, says YouTube’s system for policing copyright infringement protects the “behemoths of the creative industry,” such as large movie studies and record labels, but leaves small producers to essentially fend for themselves. YouTube’s digital tool Content ID ferrets out unauthorized use of copyrighted material. But the tool is only provided to large content providers, according to Schneider. Others, including herself, “are relegated to vastly inferior and time-consuming manual means...

YouTube Music spotted testing Spotify-like ‘Collaborate’ feature for playlists

Let it be social media platforms, OTT players, video conferencing apps or any other software application, the aim of brands have always been the same - offer everything that others are offering, so they are not left behind. And in a bid to achieve this, companies often pick similar features from rival platforms, giving them a slight twist to make it their own. YouTube Music is doing something similar now. The audio streaming application is said to be working on a Spotify-like ‘Collaborate’ feature for playlists. As spotted by 9to5Google, you might soon be able to collaborate with your friends and curate a single playlist. The feature spotted doesn’t work yet and is not appearing for each and every one. However, the iconography, label and other tweaks strongly suggest that this Spotify-l...

YouTube app gets bedtime reminders

We all are guilty of binge-watching videos on YouTube. And the present circumstances have only escalated this trend thereby increasing our overall screen time. Now, YouTube has launched a new feature to help you cut down your screen time on its platform. The company has rolled out a feature called ‘Bedtime Reminders’ that lets users set reminders at specific times so that they stop watching videos and, well, go to bed. Users can set the start and end times as per their convenience. They can also decide whether or not they want the prompt to interrupt the video that they are watching or wait until the video is over. Additionally, they can also dismiss or snooze the reminders. YouTube says that it has started rolling out this feature to its A and Android and iOS based apps starting tod...
