If everything goes well, then soon the 18-year law of marriage of girls in our country will be changed. For this, the Modi government is now going to make a new law. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started planning in the year 2020 while addressing from the Red Fort in Delhi on 15 August.
The Prime Minister had said that a committee has been formed for what should be the right age of marriage of girls. Since then preparations had started to change the law made for the marriage of girls in the country. It was recommended by the task force headed by Jaya Jaitley in NITI Aayog.
On the basis of this recommendation, in the meeting of the Union Cabinet held on Wednesday, a resolution has been passed to increase the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years. Now it will be introduced in the Parliament and if passed there, it will become a law.
The Central Government will bring a law to amend the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006 and along with it amendments will also be made in the Special Marriage Act and Personal Laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act 1955. Let us tell you here that according to the current law, the minimum age of marriage for men in the country is 21 and for women is 18. Now the government will amend the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, Special Marriage Act, and Hindu Marriage Act. After this, the marriage of girls will increase from 18 to 21 years. Explain that according to the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872, the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936, the Special Marriage Act 1954, and the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, all the boys must be 21 years old and the girl 18 years to get married.
No change or exemption has been given in this according to religion. Presently the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006 is in force. According to which marriage before 21 and 18 will be considered as child marriage. Doing so and getting it done can be punishable with imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of up to one lakh. Now the central government is going to abolish the law of 18 years for daughters to 21 years.
