A two-day meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretaries has been called over the weekend to discuss organisational matters and the 2022 assembly elections in five states. The meeting, to take place on June 5 and 6, will be chaired by BJP chief JP Nadda at his residence in New Delhi.
While party and organisational matters are on the table, the BJP leaders are expected to discuss strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections in 2022.
This is the first formal meeting of the party leadership since the recent assembly elections, in which the BJP suffered an embarrassing drubbing at the hands of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal while retaining power in Assam.
The states that go to the polls in 2022 are Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Gujarat. The BJP is currently in power in all states but Punjab.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness a high-stake election. The BJP had swept the state in 2017 with 306 seats.
This will be Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s first election as leader of the party in the state. He was a Lok Sabha MP five years ago when the party elected him to occupy the coveted chief minister’s seat after its massive victory.
