A 20-month-old toddler named Dhanishtha from Delhi’s Rohini has served a noble cause far beyond her years. She has become the youngest cadaver donor, donating multiple organs – giving a new lease of life to five patients. Her heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas were retrieved at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and were used for five patients.

Dhanishtha had fallen from the first-floor balcony of her home while playing on the evening of January 8 and became unconscious. She was rushed to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where despite the best of efforts she could not be saved. The child was declared brain dead on January 11. All other organs were working in excellent condition.

In spite of the irreparable loss, Dhanishtha’s parents Ashish Kumar and Babita decided to donate their child’s organs.

“During our stay at the hospital, we met many patients who were in dire need of organs. Although we have lost our daughter, she continues to “live” and is either giving life or improving the quality of life of needy patients.” said Ashish Kumar.

According to Dr. DS Rana, Chairman (BOM), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, “This noble act of the family is really praiseworthy and should motivate others. At 0.26 per million, India has among the lowest rate of organ donation. On an average 5 lakh Indians die every year due to lack of organs.”
